The EA exam

Congratulations on your decision to pursue status as an Enrolled Agent (EA). The EA certification opens career doors and opportunities that go beyond what even a CPA shingle makes possible.  For one thing, you’ll be able to practice anywhere in the world where expatriate Americans need tax consulting or preparation. For another, you’ll be able to deal with state agencies across the country, not like CPAs who are restricted to states where their CPA is recognized. But make no mistake, there’s a big barrier standing between you and becoming an EA: the formidable EA exam. Passing this tough test won’t be easy. It’s going to require study, more study and lots of practice — intensive preparation.

You’ve got two things going for you:
